The Fit Scientist Blog: A One-Stop Shop for the ‘Neuro-Curious’

If you were to ask a cardiologist what the most vital organ in the human body is, they would say the heart; a pulmonologist may say the lungs, and so on. Well, as a neuroscientist, I believe the brain is arguably the most fascinating, complex, incredible, and, yes, vital organ in the human body. What other organ is the master controller for every other one and holds the secrets to your every thought, emotion, and action? The answer is NONE!
I find the field of Neuroscience not only be objectively fascinating but because it has endless practical, real-world applications, its nothing short of amazing. When we understand how our brains function, we are better equipped to, for lack of a better term, ‘hack’ ourselves. This can help us break bad habits and become more attentive, productive, focused, and creative. For example, did you know that taking short breaks to move your body can dramatically improve focus and attention? Or that exposure to natural light is crucial for regulating your circadian rhythms and energy levels? How about that even slight dehydration (2%) can cause short-term memory loss?
Just a general understanding of neuroscience can give you a serious edge—the more you know about how your brain works, the better you can optimize it. Because of neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change and adapt as you learn, it is never too late to improve your brain! Applying neuroscientific findings to your everyday life allows you to make tiny, meaningful shifts that lead to lasting change.
This blog is a way for me to share everything I have learned and what I’m still uncovering with each new day to help you improve your brain health and function for today, tomorrow, and years to come. And bonus – what’s good for your brain is good for the rest of you! So, while we will approach all topics from a brain or neuro-centric place because the brain doesn’t function in a silo, improving your brain health has far reaching effects that are genuinely limitless.
Knowledge is always the first piece of any puzzle – so we will start there. However, true learning comes from doing. So, I will also provide you with practical “how” tools when appropriate. From motivating playlists that get your body moving to mindfulness-based stress management techniques that can help quiet your chattering mind, you can find it all here. Wondering about the best brain-friendly foods and supplements? I’ve got you covered there too!
We have a lot to cover and lots of fun to have along the way! So, buckle up and prepare for a deep dive into everything brain-related. No topic is off the table! My only question is, are you ready?
